Puppet Show

Age: 3-5, 6-8
Location: Indoor
Set-up: Planned

  • Shoe box or small cardboard box
  • Cereal box or thick cardboard
  • Tape
  • Markers
  • Thin popsicle sticks or straws
  • Olfa knife (or scissors if not available)
  • Optional: Tissue paper

Take a shoe box or small cardboard box with an opening lid and cut a rectangle on one of the sides leaving a one inch frame. Cut 5 pieces 5 inches by 5 inches of a thinner cardboard (a cereal box is ideal) to make the puppets. The size and number of the pieces can vary depending on the kind of puppets you would like to create. Have your child draw different animals or characters on each cardboard piece. Take a straw or thin stick and tape it to the back of each of the cardboard pieces. Make sure that you tape the cardboard piece to the bottom of the stick. With the scissors or olfa knife, make 5 holes (or the amount of puppets you made) at the top lid of the cardboard box. Open the lid and pass the top part of the puppets' stick through. Close the box back up making sure that the puppets are high enough to be seen through the frame of the "theater". If you have tissue paper, you can decorate the inside of the theater. If you have markers or tape you can also have you child decorate the outside of the box.

Have your child make up stories and act them out with the puppet show for an afternoon of pretend fun!
